Network Cable in the Sitting Room
Hang on, I hear you say - Network Cable in my lovely sitting room, this is a home not an office!! Are you sure??
... and my answer is, absolutely!
Times change very quickly and the future is fast approaching - well, of course the future is always fast approaching but that is a philosophical issue that I'll not be addressing right now.
I'm not sure what is in store but at some point everything is going to be networked up.
For now it certainly makes sense to network your tv to your computer, this way you can stream music and video files from it, you need a network media player for this, but they are inexpensive and becoming cheaper all the time, of course this can be done wirelessly but there are security issues with that - although you probably haven't got the kind of nosey neighbours that I have.
It's also a question of bandwidth, much more info can go down a cable than through the air, and as the quality of pictures/video improves then it will suck up bandwith like crazy, so you'd best be prepared.
Other cool things I have right now are a couple of networked cameras which are fun and also have a security application as well.
I run cable through that plastic electrical trunking where it was hidden behind furniture and got some of that hollow skirting board where there was no furniture to run it behind, so no-one gets to see unsightly cabling
