Getting Thinking about Your Sitting Room
Ok, if you are a girl or a gay man then you're in your natural environment here - designing rooms, planning layouts and so forth is what you were born for ... of course you have other skills too - you just happen to be naturally adept at this.
All is not lost if you are a hetro male, you are just going to have to work harder at it - get used to browsing catalogues, cruising around design shops - take a new interest in soft furnishings, cool and comfy sofas, colour charts and other things not usually on your radar.
At the planning stage there is not a whole lot to focus on, you have to decide on the colour schemes, consider the paint or wall-paper question and get an general idea in your head as to what furniture you want to include.
Personally I go for a paint finish over wallpaper every time, the ceiling is always going to be white - I've yet to find a good reason to go with anything else. The walls though deserve colour, I like to go for a 2-tone effect, it is tremendously effective - by which I mean, use 2 colours, one strong and the other a paler version, this can even be done by mixing the strong colour with white paint, thereby producing a softer version of the primary colour.
If you use one of those so called expert colour wheels or other method of pairing up colours, they only end up suggesting something like you would have come up with my method anyway.
Use the primary or stronger/darker colour on one wall as well as any natural alcoves or recesses that you have. If you are going to have a large mirror in the sitting room, that would be the wall you want to use your primary colour on. Then paint the other walls with the toned down colour, believe me, it really does work well.
