Electric Power in your Sitting Room
We live in a power hungry world - our houses are especially so and the sitting room is probably the most greedy of all.
So make sure your Sitting Room Design adventure includes taking time out to ponder on power points.
Ok, I realise that electrical power sockets are not the most exciting thing to think about, well maybe if you are an uber-electrician geek then perhaps you dream about neat colour coded electrical flex and wake up in a cold sweat caused by weird nightmares involving power surges, faulty circuitry and poor connections.
For the rest of us, such things don't really come to mind, but please take a few minutes right now to ponder on just how many appliances or bits of equipment you may require or desire in your sitting room...
Count up your lamps, your entertainment equipment, add a couple for things as yet not invented and a spare or two for temporary items such as a vacuum cleaner, yes, more than you first thought wasn't it!!
Doubtless you haven't enough sockets, so what to do? Well either get yourself some of those multipoint extension cables or call an electrician in - for the UK, electrical work requiring the mains to be turned off (eg. adding new power points) must always be done by a certified electrician, I imagine most other civilised countries have a similiar law.
This probably means a half day or even a full day's work for an electrician, installing a few power points, ensuring the trip switch box is wired correctly and can support the amount of power you may require.
Naturally it's a bit of a chore having to pay out for this however at least you'll get peace of mind that the job has been done properly, plus you'll have plenty of sockets for those things you haven't even thought about yet.
Checklist of Electric Sockets Required
- Count up the Lamps and Sidelights
- Television
- Amplifier, Sound System, Powered Speakers
- DVD Player
- CD Player
- Network Media Player - Stream Music and Movies from your Computer, you'll want one some time!!
- (Covert) CCTV Camera - yeah really, either for security or maybe just for watching over your kids/babysitter/nanny.
- Digital Photo Frame or two
- Will you want to plug a Laptop in (those batteries are always running flat)
- Do you have a powered telephone?
- Couple of Spares for things yet unknown.
- At least one for Vacuum Cleaner and suchlike.
